in the newspaper

i decided to take a walk today

in the park

taking photos along the way

of nothing special

except for one

an old man

jamal

who stopped me

and my camera

asked to be in the newspaper.

sweet old man

i’m not a newspaper photographer,

i’m just a girl

with a camera

looking for moments to capture

so i’ll never forget

so i can show others

what i see.

sweet old man,

i see you.

this photo is holding multiple purposes. it is the first photo i am sharing for the 100 strangers project (it’s not the first i’ve taken. i have about five others that i need to share soon, very soon.) so meet jamal. i met him just a block from my home. you can also see the collection of photos for the 100 strangers project on flickr.

the photo’s next purpose is for the assignment i am participating in for souvenir foto (found originally on this inspiring blog). i’m coming in on the tenth assignment of reflection. the reflection in the dear man’s glasses fits the assignment perfectly. the reflection will forever remind me of the streets in my neighborhoods with brownstones lined up side by side standing tall together.

Ohh!!! He is just wonderful, great capture. I’m 100% terrified of asking strangers if I can take their portrait, yet it’s something I would really love to do.

  • Jamal looks to be a friendly ole man. I love the close up of him. It’s a great start on your 100 strangers project. Hope all is well.

okay, so this post does not blatantly go with my post tonight, but there are so many things about it that subtly remind me of my post, and it just made me smile—especially the part about “looking for moments to capture”. it is why i LOVE photography so much! and why i mentioned loving that people have been capturing moments—historical ones, even when they did not know they were historical—since the first cameras were invented.

awesome shot! he does look like the sweetest old man. and yet like a very young man at heart. he’s adorbs!

    oh, p.s.

i will respond to your e-mail soon. i just have not gotten around to responding to e-mails, and i couldn’t wait to see what your latest “be a photograph” post was all about. but thank you so much for the e-mail. :)

Wow, that’s pretty funny. And cool. Very well done photo. :]
I’ve been wanting to try and take photos of strangers too, but I’ve never tried. Simply because I don’t think poeple would take me very seriously. I feel as if I might get a laugh out of them instead of acceptance. You know, with my point-and-shoot camera and all. xD But I think I will soon.

i know what you mean lee. i definitely feel more comfortable with a dslr… but i did recently take a photo of a stranger using a point-and-shoot… but he had a cat on his head, so i guess he’s expecting everyone to take photos of him! i mostly take photos of people who would “expect” it: street performers, musicians, people doing interesting things. start there.
