landscape into art

green with texture

some of you may recognize the photo above. it was one that i had, at one point, used as a potential banner for this photo blog. i’m sure you notice something a little different about it this time, the texture of words softly floating over the photo.

i am learning photoshop, just like photography itself, on my own, through experience and experiments. the other night i was explaining something to some friends about photoshop… how i do something… but i made sure to tell them that it might not be the “right” way, it’s just what i do. :)

i created this photo with the inspiration from this photo on grabrielle kai’s website monday morning. when i clicked over to check out the texture she had available for download, i realized it was simply a photo of a letter (a beautiful one, at that). then this morning, as i was clicking through dpchallenge.com (thanks alissa for the membership… love good birthday presents), i came upon a tutorial about textures. it hit me. i could create my own textures. i could collect photos of textures to use over other photos. (this was definitely an ah-ha moment for me, even though it may seem obvious to others!)

i pulled out some old art books i found on a stoop last spring, and snapped a few photos of the pages. above are words from the book, landscape into art. (these words were also used to create these birds.) i also have a book that has an old map of what manhattan might have looked like… i should put that as a texture of a photo of the city, with a vintage feel to it…
